Muffled crunching noises echoed to the entrance of the cave where Silthie and Kinoki stood. Silthie whipped her head round, staring intently into the tunnel. Nothing had changed. Yet, something seemed off.
The little dragon crept into the cave as Kinoki dashed past her. Plip, plip, echoed the dew as it dripped off of the stalactites. A familiar scent was in the air. She quickened her pace, claws tapping against the hard rock floor. Was it just her, or--no, it couldn't have been. She unmistakably smelled chocolate chip cookies. The further she ran, the more obvious the smell became. It was almost like a mix between cookies, mud, and damp fur; in a word, Misty. Before she knew it she found herself standing at the edge of that big, glowing pool, still as ice save for her beating heart. She could smell Misty more clearly than ever, but the wolf pup was nowhere to be found.
Neither was Kinoki.
Silthie stared into the portal like a deer in the headlights. Still trembling, she ponderingly lifted her front foot and dipped it into the water-like matter, expecting the edge of the portal to be shallow like the edge of a pond. She set her foot down on what she thought would be solid ground, only to find herself falling foot-first. A squeak escaped her just before hitting the portal—then, nothing but pure light.
When she opened her eyes, she found herself laying on the dusty floor of yet another cave. But rather than being filled with light, the darkness of the cave seemed to be so thick that you could cut through it with a butter knife. She really wanted some butter right now, but—oh, she had to find out where in Lunaryk she was. Was this what the portal led to? Nothingness? No, there was just enough light for her reflective scales to help her see where her feet were, and they were clearly on solid ground.
Suddenly, a voice pierced through the darkness. It sounded like the voice of Kinoki, and he was calling for Misty. “Kinoki!” Silthie called out, delighted to hear a familiar voice. Her fears lessened, and with the light of her reflective scales to guide her, she journeyed deeper in the direction of his voice.
