*dusts off suggestions forum*
Random idea I thought of.
So, members who quit have a choice to either gift or not gift their pets when they leave. I don't want to mess with that, that's fine. But what about members who quit without warning?
My idea is, if someone hasn't logged in (not just posted to the forum, they haven't even logged into their account at all) for, say, 2-3 years, their pets are considered abandoned can be impounded and given a new home.
Impounded pets are sold like normal pound pets, except they contain some sort of marking with the original owner's username, like a dogtag in the corner or something. Or somebody could just keep a Google Spreadsheets file tracking the owners and puppies (I think a marking denoting pups that have changed hands would be cool though!). Should the original owner return to the site, the new owners may at their discretion keep or return the pet to the original player. And of course a new rule would have to be implemented that the old owner could not guilt-trip or beg for their pets back (publicly or through PMs) because, well... a few years is a long time to forget about your puppehs. :c And once people leave for that long, it's very unlikely they'll come back.
Of course since MnF has been very quiet for a long time, if this is implemented, I think we should give it a year or two after the site becomes active again before we start impounding puppies. Active as in, back to where it was before where we at least had an event on major holidays. xD Old inactive members might start trickling back in.
I think the pros are better than the cons. On one hand, it might cause some grief, BUT I think most people would give the pets back. I probably would unless I was really, REALLY attached to the pup I got. So at the very least, players who return would have much of their den intact. Aaaand, the fault does kinda rest on them for ignoring/forgetting an active site for multiple years.
Also, perhaps to give people incentive to return pups, they could get items that match the rarity of the pup. Example:
Simple - Misc item (Cake, Dog Tag), or Cookie
Mutant - Accessory item, food colouring, mutant-summoning item (if/when that is made), or 2 Simple-rarity items
Elemental - Elemental-summoning item, 2 Mutant-rarity items, or 3 Simple-rarity items
Simple/Mutant, or multiple mutations - Worth same as elemental?
Superior - Superior-summoning item (if/when that is made), 2 Elemental-Rarity items, 3 Mutant-rarity items, or 5 Simple-rarity items
Elemental/Mutant - Worth same as Superior.
Elemental/Superior - Some crazy item that doesn't exist
Multiple-type Superior Elemental? or Elemental/Superior/Mutant - Some even crazier item that doesn't exist
But then you have a problem. On one hand, it initially makes things easier on our dear admin. Assuming we have a sale or whatever every month, a pound sale could be scheduled instead. Basically Misty would have a break since the pups are already made, instead of having to draw all-new pets AND host the sale. BUT, should the original owner return (unlikely after many years, but possible), she now has even more work checking the spreadsheet to see who owns who, locating the original certed pet (though that could also be kept in the spreadsheet), giving gifts to the people who decided to give the pups back, and possibly making new pups. I recommend getting a secretary should this occur. xD
