Drachall, the Land of the Dragons, was one of many floating islands. Agreeably it is probably the most mysterious, shrouded with all sorts of legends. The most famous of these legends are the dragon riders. No one is sure when men first tamed dragons. All we know is that since then, everything has changed. Whether its for the better or the worse, that's for you to decide.
Our world is dying. One by one the islands collapse. Already, entire civilizations have fallen. Today, Drachall is one of the last survivors.
~
...dun dun DUN Anyway, I'm sure we all know the rules, so I guess we can start! First though, I think I'm going to post a short description of my characters, just to get a basic idea of them. :3

((OOC: So apparently I have a ton of adoptables that I have yet to use stored in one of my dA accounts, so might as well try using one of them XD I'll try to draw him some time to make more sense of his design. According to the random name generator, his name shall be Nikolai :U I have no idea how he's going to be like, but I guess we'll see when he interacts with Amaris. Though, their first meeting won't exactly be pleasant. After all, they meet where he's in critical condition and his best friend (a dragon) is dead because the dragon pretty much sacrificed himself or something to save him or something. Yep. Amaris should totally brush up in her comforting skills. He looks like a sweet boy though. I guess he's just probably gonna be traumatized/depressed for the first couple of posts ahaha. Basically this picture is me right now: link removed
Okay time to sleep XD))

(OOC: lol, she will indeed. xD Would you like me to post your character descriptions up on the topic? Also, this is totally off-topic, but how do you do that text effect? ) All was quiet; perhaps a bit too quiet. But little did it matter to the deer that continued to peacefully graze, seemingly oblivious to the girl that stalked them. They pricked their ears up in alarm as they heard the familiar sound of an arrow about to fire, but stood motionless with their heads pointing in its direction. Shlik! went the arrow as it left its bow and went whizzing by, missing the deer by a smidge. Yet, right at that moment, a blue wyvern burst from the bushes. In a flash, the deer dashed off in fright. “Argh! Mitzu, you ruined my hunt again!” Amaris scolded as she stomped her foot in aggravation. Mitzu lowered his head in shame, looking at her with his small, beady eyes. “It’s ok, boy. I was only exaggerating. But next time, only come out when I give the signal.” She patted his long neck with a smile. Mitzu’s head suddenly jerked up, which caused Amaris to draw back her hand in alarm. “What’s wrong, boy?” She said in concern. Mitzu was growling. Amaris’ eyes instantly fell upon a large puddle of mud as she scanned the area. Normally she would laugh. After all, why should a dragon be so scared of a mud puddle? But that was exactly the reason why she was so concerned. Granted, Mitzu was easily frightened, but being scared of mud was a bit extreme. She slowly approached the puddle, but was stopped by Mitzu who wrapped her protectively in his wings. Amaris wriggled out of his grip with a huff of annoyance, giving him a signal to stay. She took a step forward…Then another… …Nothing jumped out to eat her. A little more confident now, she quickened her pace and continued to creep forward until she was just a foot away from the puddle. Amaris turned to her dragon with a frown. “Mitzu, there’s nothing to be afraid of. See? It’s just a…” her heart seemed to have skipped a beat as she turned around to see what looked like a giant mongoose emerging from the mud. “…ICHNEUMON!” In the blink of an eye, Mitzu shoved Amaris out of the way before the ichneumon could lash out at her, grabbing her arms with his back legs and flying away as fast as he could. He dropped her off in the middle of a forest, where Amaris rubbed her sore arms. “I am never going to go anywhere near a mud puddle agai—” Amaris gasped as her eyes beheld the sight of a dead dragon. (OOC: "The ichneumon is the enemy of the dragon. When it sees a dragon, the ichneuman covers itself with mud, and closing its nostrils with its tail, attacks and kills the dragon. Some say it is also the enemy of the crocodile and the asp, and attacks them in the same way. This may be a confusion with the hydrus, which has these same habits.")

((OOC: let the angst begin.))
The dragon that lay in front of Amaris was on top of a pool of its own blood; its fatal wound on the chest where its beating heart would've been. The creature looked elegant in appearance, though its scales had already started to dull and a few were already falling off. Its back was facing the girl and her own dragon. Everything was quiet, and it seemed like it had been that way for quite some time.
Unbeknownst to the two of them, there was somebody else with them in that small clearing of the forest. A boy of 18 had been on the grassy floor, soon to meet the same fate as his dragon if nobody was to help him. He suffered several scratches and bruises, with some of them deeper than others. He also had a concussion - he was still conscious, but barely. He had been trying to lift his head up just to get a better look at his friend who had sacrificed his life to save him. His heart had been grieving; tears had been rolling down his cheeks as he wept, but the pain made it so hard to even let out a shout of anger and mourning. His fingers tried to grasp the blades of grass in an attempt to push himself off the ground but with little success. Was this how things were going to end?
They were just going out for a ride...and then...and then...
I'm so sorry, he kept repeating to himself; his voice barely audible. It's all my fault.
He was going to die here, wasn't he? He could already feel himself passing out - things were starting to feel cold. It wasn't like anybody was nearby, they were in the middle of the forest. By the time anybody would reach here, he'd be dead. Another unfortunate casualty. What a pity. He suddenly remembered all the times he spent with his dragon, and now he was gone.
See you on the other side, Altan.
((OOC: well I'm using a simple-ish text effect right now. Has something to do with div style or something. I used to RP here in proboards where they really had snazzy effects, but I find the simple stuff like this best ehehe. And no need, I think leaving the posts like that would be alright unless you really want to put it up there, to which I'll promptly delete my post after XD))

(OOC: Ah, I see. xD Alrighty, then!)
Amaris immediately hid behind a tree. She winced, clenching her fists until her fingernails left marks on her skin. She sighed, then started to walk away as if nothing had ever happened. As she tried to convince herself of this, she soon realized it wasn't working. That scarring image still lingered in her mind, no matter how much she clenched her fists. The more she tried to forget it, the heavier that memory became. Finally she collapsed, landing on Mitzu's muzzle that had swiftly caught her. He roared softly, setting her up on her feet again.
Amaris continued to lean on Mitzu. She looked into the eyes of her dragon, remembering when she had first found him as a baby. He was the only thing she had left from her childhood. Even when her home was destroyed, Mitzu had remained loyal to her. Then the memory came back. The memory of the dragon lying in its puddle of blood. *How could I let this happen?* she thought. That question echoed in her mind for what had seemed like hours to her. She couldn't. She just couldn't.
Amaris got up with a sigh. She could at least make sure if the dragon really was dead first. She crept closer to the fallen beast, studying the wound in slight disgust. But the dragon wasn’t alone. Next to him lay what Amaris assumed was his rider, who had taken quite the blow as well.
The dragon was dead; that Amaris knew. But the boy still had a chance. She carefully laid him on Mitzu's back and dug through her sack of supplies she always carried with her, trying to find something to help him.
"Dang it!" She muttered under her breath. "Where are all my herbs?" Amaris let out a loud, raspy sigh of aggravation. She quickly pulled out a wool blanket and, assuming it would help somehow, put it on the stranger. She then leaped onto Mitzu, grabbing hold of the reigns he always had equipped.
"Dul!" Amaris commanded Mitzu. And with that, he charged at full speed.
"Mitzu, careful!" She squeaked. A particularly large bump in the road had almost caused the boy to fall off the dragon’s back. As they traveled back home, Amaris continually muttered things such as, "Come on, stay with me, You're going to live...I promise." and "Don't give in. You have to stay strong."
After what had felt like an eternity, a familiar shape came into view which Amaris recognized to be home. They had made it.

Footsteps... was he hallucinating, or was there someone close by? For a moment, he had already felt like accepting his fate, but it seemed like fate itself had other plans. Wait, was that a voice? It was, wasn't it? He wasn't dreaming, but he couldn't tell what she was saying. Did he still have enough strength to hold on to this thin thread of life that he had left?
He felt something draped over him - it felt warm. He then felt his body shift, as if he was being transferred somewhere else. And before he knew it, the ground under him moved. He could recognise the movement; he was on a dragon. A dragon rider had found him? What luck, he supposed, but he felt so tired, so tired...
His eyes had been shut, unable to see anything, but he can hear more clearly now. Whoever had rescued him seemed to care a great deal, and he supposed he should consider himself lucky. The boy couldn't help but see flashes of his final moments with his dragon though - against that ichneumon...they were no match for it. For some reason, that one had managed to catch them off guard and overpower them with little effort. It repeated in his mind over and over like a broken video tape, focusing on parts that hurt the most. He had screamed his dragon's name so loudly that moment.
Should he just give up? But this rider went out her way to save him, so he couldn't...but he was so tired...

Mitzu slowed his pace as he slinked through a large dragon-sized entrance in the back of the house. Right as they entered, Amaris jumped off of him. Then, she cautiously carried the stranger to her bed. Once he was moved to a better place, she continued her energy spurts. In less than a minute she grabbed a bowl, filled it with water, put it by her bedside table, got a cloth, grabbed some bandages, put those by her bedside table, took out the…*herbs.* she thought. *I need herbs!*
“I—I—gotta go. Like, now. Uh, Mitzu—watch him!” and with that she skidded out the door without a second thought, leaving her dragon alone with the boy.
Mitzu gave a low, curious growl. He nudged the stranger slightly. Then he nudged him again, a little harder this time. He didn’t…Seem to mind. Ok. Now he could sniff him. He yanked his head back slightly when he smelt the stench of an ichneumon, which made him all the more curious. Once he was finished with that, he decided he would make a perfect pillow, so he lay down on the floor with his head on the boy’s chest.
(OOC: Why, Amaris, why? xD)

He felt movement again, was he being set down somewhere? Maybe they reached the place where his final moments would be (if the person who had saved him would allow such a thing to happen). Nikolai then felt an odd sensation on his side. Was something touching him? Pushing him? He would let out a little groan if he could, but it seemed like his voice box wasn't going to cooperate with him this time. He couldn't react properly. What the heck was nudging him, anyway? The dragon that he had been riding on? He didn't even get to have a good look at it...
More movement, wait, was there something on his chest? Oh, it was on something rather soft and warm. It felt comfortable - this wasn't a very bad place to die. It was better than the forest, but he preferred to be looking at his best friend in his final moments, to be honest. It was getting a little hard to breathe, though.
Should he really keep thinking that he was going to die here? Nikolai kept feeling that all hope was lost, but in the back of his mind, he felt like he could still hold on for a while longer, especially since fate gave him a chance to recover thanks to...whoever rescued him. Well, he definitely wasn't out of the woods yet as he hadn't been treated, but being moved from somewhere that wasn't outside already felt like a pretty good step forward. How he could think so freely was beyond him - perhaps the sensation of seemingly losing everything made him think oddly.
((OOC: she seems to be doing okay so far XD))

Amaris swung open the door to reveal a very guilty dragon.
“Mitzu, what are you doing?!” She squeaked, dropping her sack of herbs on the floor. She quickly shoved her dragon’s head off the stranger. “You don’t use nearly-dead people as pillows!”
She hastily grabbed a cup and filled it with water. Then, she dunked the herbs in and put it over the fire to simmer. While it was still warming up, she dragged a chair over and grabbed the cloth and the bowl of water she put by her bedside table. Amaris proceeded to cleaning his wounds.
“Don’t worry.” She said to the stranger, a bit calmer now. “I’m sure you did as much as you could for your dragon.”
Mitzu gave a small growl. “Not now, Mitzu.” Amaris groaned. But her dragon continued to make strange growling noises. Amaris bit her lip in an attempt to focus on the pain rather the annoying yelps of her dragon, but when he started nudging her…that was the limit.
“Cut it out, Mitzu!” she snapped as, due to his nudging, some drops of water spilled onto the floor. He gave a little roar, turning his head towards the kitchen. At last Amaris got up with a sigh and headed in the direction Mitzu’s head was pointing to. She suddenly froze in shock, certain that a vein or two must’ve popped at that moment.
“The—the water! The herbs!” she gasped, rushing over to the nearly evaporated water that was still boiling. She quickly pulled it out of the fire onto a nearby table and massaged her blistered fingers.
“Ugh…Why didn’t I remember to take it out?” Amaris sighed. She went over to her chair again and began to bandage the injured rider’s wounds.

The weight on his chest suddenly disappeared. He then heard shouting, and maybe some guilty whines from a dragon. Ah, it all sounded too familiar that it made his heart ache. Even when someone was dying in their home(?) they were still fighting over something. He wondered if he should really put his life in their hands. Nikolai then felt something rubbing gently against his skin. It felt like cloth, and it seemed to be soaked in something. He figured that maybe he had been lying there for so long that the clotting process in his wounds had already started to take effect, so maybe he wasn't bleeding as much as he expected.
He felt rather out of it, though.
Don't worry. I’m sure you did as much as you could for your dragon.
Those words that he managed to process stung more than his rescuer's attempt at cleaning his wounds. It wasn't enough, he'd think, He's still dead. And it's all my fault. There was another moment again that a person started to shout - the same one that probably owned the dragon. More footsteps, had she left somewhere? At that moment, Nikolai decided that he should try opening his eyes to see if he could get a better idea of what was going on. He found himself staring at a ceiling, and the room looked rather spacious enough, but his vision was still blurry.
He let out a small groan from suddenly feeling pain surge throughout his whole body when he tried to move just a little bit. Nevertheless, he did get a good look at his rescuer now, but his mind was still too hazy to think of anything properly.
Wait, did they just leave his dragon out there? Of course they did, but - but - Altan... he wished that he could at least give him a proper burial before any of the other animals would feast on his corpse. The image hurt him.

Amaris heard a little groan.
“Mitzu, I swear, if you don’t keep quiet right now I’m going to—” She suddenly stopped when she realized that the sound was coming from the boy. She looked down at the stranger in pity.
“…Sorry.” She said quietly, realizing her behavior. This was one of the main reasons she detached herself from society. Whenever she wanted to help or console someone, she would just end up hurting them in some way or another. And her certainly temper didn’t help.
“But what could I do? Leave you there to die?” Amaris sighed as she bandaged the last of his wounds. She got up and grabbed the cup of water and herbs that had finished cooling off. Then, she put it up to the stranger’s lips in an attempt to force-feed him, since he was too weak to do so himself.
“Come on. Swallow.” She whispered.

She was speaking again, looking elsewhere before realising that it had been Nikolai who had groaned instead of her dragon. She then apologise, to which the boy managed to mutter a weak reply that she didn't need to. He didn't know if it was loud enough for her to hear, though. And he felt glad that she wasn't the type of person that would ignore her conscience and indeed him alone to die. He knew that people like that existed in this world - maybe for more than one moment, he was one of them.
He felt uncomfortable when she tried to let him drink, but he couldn't exactly argue nor fight back, so he did as told. He swallowed it weakly, but he could already feel a tingling sensation fill his chest as he drank. It was calming, as if it was cooling him down. He had let out a sigh when given a chance to breathe again. His body seemed to relax, and suddenly he felt drowsy. Sleep sounded like a nice option, but he wondered if he was going to wake up again if he did so. Was he going to wake up to this same ceiling, or in front of Altan? He felt his eyes close again as he started to drift off. If his rescuer started to speak again, though, maybe he would fight to stay awake just for a while longer.

Amaris let out a sigh of relief. She had succeeded. The boy was going to live.
She decided to leave the stranger alone so that he could rest, and was about to do the same until she remembered that his dragon was still out there. That wouldn’t have been a pleasant thing to find out when he woke up. But…How in Drachall could she ever dig a hole big enough to fit a dragon? Why, she should get another dragon to dig it for her, of course. But that would mean leaving the injured rider all alone, and who knows how long they would take. She clenched her jaw.
*He’ll be fine.* Amaris thought to herself. *I mean, what could happen? Him falling off the bed?* thinking these things, she quietly crept out the door and motioned for Mitzu to follow.
“Besides,” she said to herself out loud as she mounted her dragon. “It’s better to leave him alone than to leave him with Mitzu. No offense, of course.” Mitzu grunted in reply.

It took him a while to realise that he had been dreaming.
Though even in his dreams, he was still haunted by what had just happened to him. He thought he felt his dragon nuzzle against him, and then before he knew it, the whole dream would shift to that moment when they had landed on the forest floor, thinking of taking a break. It had been an enjoyable, pleasant ride, and he wouldn't have expected for it to be ruined in the worst way possible. They had been ambushed rather unexpectedly, and while Nikolai had his sword on hand, the ichneumon was just too strong. But at the back of his head, he knew that it was him who had stumbled. They could've killed that monster if he didn't let his guard down. Altan would've still been alive if it weren't for him.
He didn't wake up with a jolt, but he had opened his eyes again to find out that yes, indeed, he was still alive. At least it seemed like it. He wondered if he could really face his own dragon in the afterlife without so much shame and guilt. Was it better, then, for him to still be alive? Wait, what was he thinking? He inwardly scowled.
Nikolai tried to push himself up, but the movement caused him great pain, forcing him to fall back on the bed. He groaned in annoyance and frustration, being unable to do anything was the worst. Was he alone? Where did that girl and her dragon go? They went out? Hm...
Guess he was going to be stuck here for a while.

“Hey, um, Mitzu? You might want to be a little faster than that.” Amaris said as she sat down beside the hole her dragon was digging. She was sculpting a large rock she had found into a tomb stone for the dragon. Mitzu purposefully missed and kicked up a mound of dirt on his rider, which caused her to let out a squeak.
“Mitzu! Fine, take all the time you like. That guy could be dying right now.” At this Mitzu paused. He started digging again, except this time even faster, and finished in a matter of minutes. Amaris looked into what was more like a tunnel, nodding her head in approval.
“Wow. Ok, now you can put the dragon in!” She patted her dragon’s side, backing up a little to give him some space. Mitzu gave a low growl of annoyance. Then, he carefully hauled the dragon in.
“Good boy! Except…You gotta cover the hole, too, ya know...” Amaris trailed off. Though usually she would be the one doing all the work, after all the stress she had on her with the boy she only felt like resting. Mitzu gave a grunt.
“Go on.” Amaris said with a flick of her wrist. “You want to be a good boy, don’t you?”
Mitzu motioned for her to do it instead. But she simply lifted up stone she had as if to say “I’m doing this.” And so he reluctantly did as told, and thankfully covering up the hole didn’t take as long as digging it. When he was finished, Amaris placed the stone (which read “R.I.P.” in Drachall’s native language, with a blank space for where the dragon’s name would go, if they knew his name) in front of the grave. After paying their respects and placing some flowers by the grave, they both headed back.

Brown hair messily fell over his matching coloured eyes as he finally managed to sit up. This had been accomplished after several attempts with the previous ones making him fall back onto the bed and groaning loudly from the pain. Now that he was upright, he could finally have a better look around the room he was in, to which he had been curious about ever since he figured that he couldn't sleep. He was really curious as to where his rescuer and her dragon had gone to, but there was nothing he could do about it until they got back. His whole body was stinging from the movement, sure, but he was going to live.
Yeah, he had to accept the fact that he wasn't going to be seeing Altan for a while longer. He let out a sigh and lightly shook his head. Dwelling on it too much wouldn't do him any good. Altan would disapprove of it, probably nudging him to snap out of it. Oh how he missed his best friend - the dragon that had kept him company after he had lost his parents in that fallout (with one of the islands collapsing and stuff).
He guessed that he would feel better if he managed to talk to someone, and that someone would most likely be his rescuer when she returns. Would she be surprised to find him sitting up? Most likely. He had actually experienced several near-death experiences before, but obviously there hadn't been an instance where he had been battered this...mentally (as seeing his dragon die before him was pretty life scarring in itself). Physically, this wasn't completely new. It was probably sheer luck though that he was saved at that moment, or else he really would've died in that forest.

It was already starting to get dark when Amaris gazed upon the approaching house she had learned to love. It stood in the middle of nowhere in a small clearing in the forest, so she would never have to worry about neighbors complaining on the subject of Mitzu stealing their fish. Her house had a rather odd look to it, really. It was made of cobblestone, and several large jagged rocks bunched near its corners, giving it an almost cave-like look from a distance. One of these rock clusters hid a large opening which Amaris had made in order for Mitzu to get in. The only things that made it easier to tell it wasn’t a cave was the chimney that poked out from the straw covering the roof, and the small wooden door and overhang in the front of the house.
“You’re…up.” Amaris paused as she opened the door. Though she knew it must’ve been rather awkward for the boy, it was equally awkward for her. Since she wasn’t very used to making physical contact with other people (i.e. she could never be a physician unless someone’s life depended on it) she felt a bit edgy. Plus, she assumed the stranger would want her to keep him company, and she wasn’t one to take social initiative.
Mitzu, on the other hand, seemed to be the opposite. He leaped onto the footboard of the bed, almost caused it to tip over if it wasn’t for Amaris who shoved him off. “Mitzu! How many times have I told you not to—uh—” she coughed slightly, remembering that someone else was in her house. “Sorry about my dragon. Mitzu’s just a giant ball of energy.” Amaris sighed.

Nikolai didn't respond immediately to her comment as she entered the house. He wondered what he should say, or what would be appropriate, since he hadn't exactly been in a situation such as this before. So in the end, he let out a small 'mm' with his eyes glancing at her, as if trying to remember what she looked like just for memory's sake. She seemed rather uncomfortable with her position at the moment and he wasn't sure why.
He couldn't really dwell on that topic for long though as her dragon had jumped towards him in such a way that he felt the bed move under his weight. He let out a gasp in shock from a close call, but it seemed that the girl was used to this dragon suddenly leapt to him in excitement. She was about to scold him again, just like before, but this time she apologised. Nikolai smiled, "It's no problem, really. Sometimes my dragon would do things that I don't really agree with," and he tried to say that as evenly as he could, but remembering Altan at that moment made his throat dry. He was trying to hold himself back from crying once more, thinking that it would be embarrassing to cry in front of this stranger and her dragon. He took a few deep breaths, trying to calm himself down, before allowing himself to speak again, "Oh...and thank you. For - for saving me, I mean. I..." his voice had trailed off, now unsure of what to say. His eyes had turned its attention elsewhere to avoid even more awkwardness between them. He wasn't exactly in the best of moods.

Amaris immediately noticed the boy's sorrow, but didn't think much of it. She couldn't really think of anything to say that would calm him, though. This often made her appear as cold and unfeeling to those who didn't know her well. But for once, she actually wanted to make an effort to have a good first impression. Whether she was succeeding or not, she didn't know.
"Cry if you need to. I won't judge." Was all she could think of. Amaris didn't think very highly of emotions, which is partly why she didn't care to keep hers in check.
"Oh...and thank you. For--for saving me, I mean. I..." The boy stammered. Amaris simply grunted a "don't mention it," and after that, silence seemed to speak for them. She tried to think of what people usually did in situations such as these. Should she ask him what happened? No, that would just force him to dwell on the memory even more, and that wouldn't help. It would probably be best not to mention anything to do with his dragon at all, actually. She gave a small cough to break the silence.
"...I'm Amaris, by the way." She said, thinking that she could at least introduce herself.

He was surprised at her response, but didn't take it against her. He bit his lip and knew that he wasn't able to stop his eyes watering, but he still didn't want to cry openly in front of her. Despite all that happened, he was going to be a boy first and everything else second. Something in his subconscious simply dictated that he would try as best as he could to keep his composure down. With a little sniffle, he wiped his tears away with the edge of his palm, "No...I'm fine..." and he knew that he wasn't, but that was the first thing that came to mind without him thinking.
A silence then hung between them, which honestly didn't sit well with Nikolai. It was then she let out a cough and decided to introduce herself, "Nikolai. If you wish to shorten it, that's fine," he said promptly as he glanced at the bandages wrapped around his arms. He wondered how long he was going to be stuck here; he didn't want to cause a lot of trouble for them. Well, he technically already did, "May I ask where you went off to awhile ago?"

Amaris looked up in alarm when Nikolai asked her where she was earlier on. So much for not mentioning his dragon. But, she figured she'd have to tell him sometime or another.
"I was burying your dragon." She explained. Amaris didn't see much of a point in sugar-coating things, and preferred to be blunt and to the point. Mitzu nudged her, though it was more like a push. "What?" She uttered with her lips, shrugging. Mitzu grunted. Understanding, Amaris heaved a small sigh. "...And Mitzu helped."
She decided to change the subject so that Nikolai wouldn't have to think about it for too long. What to, she didn't exactly know. But when her stomach reminded her that she hadn't eaten all day, it didn't take long to decide. "You hungry or anything?" she asked, looking in her food stash for at least something to munch on. Empty. "I could have sworn I went hunting today..." she mumbled to herself. Then she remembered that Mitzu had spoiled her hunt, and then the ichneumon appeared, and then...Amaris sighed; not because she minded the stranger being in her house, but because that day had been particularly long for her and she had a feeling that she was going to collapse from exhaustion any minute now.
"Guess I'm going to have to go for a midnight hunt." Amaris yawned. Though it wasn't really midnight yet, she had done this plenty of times before, but she was debating whether she should do it now of all times. *Eh, maybe I can send Mitzu to get a couple of fish.* she thought, glancing at Mitzi--who was peacefully snoozing on the floor next to Nikolai--with a smirk.

They buried Altan? It surprised him more than anything else since he never expected for them to go as far as to bury him when they already saved him from dying. Sure, there was going to be sadness at the thought, but he couldn't help but feel grateful as well. He showed a small smile, "Ah...at least...I had been worried about that..." he couldn't bear to say the words just yet. To say that his dragon had been buried. He knew that there was no way they could bring him back, but a part of him still wanted to deny it, "Thank you."
The change of subject was much obliged, though he wondered if he could really eat after what had happened to him. His stomach wasn't exactly growling, but eating would probably be for the better. There didn't seem to be anything to eat though as he watched Amaris muttering to herself as she pondered her current options. He would honestly offer his assistance, but...well...he couldn't.
Mitzu had walked up to him and slept beside the bed while Amaris had been mumbling - the poor thing, he must be exhausted. He was probably the one that dug up the grave for Altan. He wanted to reach out to him, but the movement would probably be painful and uncomfortable, so he would have to show his thanks when he got better. Nikolai then looked up and noticed that Amaris had been smirking. Ah, poor Mitzu, he thought.
"I hope I'm not being too much of a burden," he said meekly, wondering if there was a possibility that he would be able to walk if he was forced to. Maybe by tomorrow he should get out of their hair. The girl didn't seem like the type that enjoyed company.

"I hope I'm not being too much of a burden,"
These words took Amaris by surprise. She glanced over her shoulder as she reached for the cupboards, shame overcoming her yet again. *Amaris...You jerk.* she winced. She was starting to think that he would've been better off with someone else and that she was the burden of the situation, and was about to consider putting him in the care of another person. *What am I thinking?!* She scolded herself. *You can't just abandon him!*
"You..." She paused, turning her head slightly but not really facing him. "You'd better get some rest." And with that she disappeared into a spare room upstairs, pulled up a chair and gave in to sleep.
It wasn’t long before Amaris woke up with a start, finding herself to be sweating all over. After taking a few moments to recuperate she let out a sigh, and untangled her hair that stuck to the back of her neck. That wasn’t just a dream, that was a memory—a memory that had lingered in her mind since she had first found Nikolai lying half-dead on the grass.
“I may have been able to save Nikolai…But I couldn’t save him.” She whispered to herself as she leaned back in her chair.

He was surprised at her response. She wasn't going to eat anymore? Well, he supposed that she was exhausted from today's events (who wouldn't be), but he thought that she was very much hungry. Nikolai couldn't even answer her when she had disappeared upstairs, leaving him alone with Mitzu who was still napping on the floor beside him. He sighed dejectedly, wondering if he had said something wrong.
He didn't really feel like resting now, honestly. The boy was still sitting on the bed, contemplating on what he should do now. Should he wait for Amaris to come back downstairs? But that could take all night if she had fallen asleep. Maybe he should just do the same - it wasn't like he couldn't do anything else.
And so with some difficultly, he lay back down and let out an exhale. Nikolai then closed his eyes and wait for sleep to take him, which happened to have taken a couple of minutes before he finally drifted off. If he felt much better tomorrow, he figured that he could try walking on his own and leaving the house.
